7 Fun Adventures in Wilmington, NC…and Where to STAY!

Wilmington, NC

Wilmington offers families and travelers a rare combination: historic charm, beach access, and a creative downtown scene that doesn’t feel overly touristy. After hosting guests here for years, I’ve learned what actually delivers on experience versus what sounds good in a brochure. Here are seven places worth your time.

1. Battleship North Carolina

Moored across the Cape Fear River, the USS North Carolina is more than a photo opportunity—it’s a self-guided tour through nine decks of World War II naval history. Kids love the gun turrets and crew quarters, while adults appreciate the scope of what life was like aboard. Plan for two hours minimum. It opens at 8 a.m. during summer, and going early beats both the heat and the crowds. Parking is $5, and the ship is a short walk from there.

2. Airlie Gardens

This 67-acre garden showcase features walking paths, seasonal blooms, and the 467-year-old Airlie Oak—a massive live oak that’s worth the admission alone. Spring azaleas are spectacular, but frankly, any season works. The butterfly house (open seasonally) is a hit with younger children. Open daily at 9 a.m., with last entry at 4 p.m. in winter and 5 p.m. in summer. Bring a water bottle; you’ll want to take your time here.

3. Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville is the closest quality beach to downtown Wilmington—about 15 minutes—and it’s where most locals go when they want sand and surf without the drive to Carolina Beach or Kure. The beach access at Tower 7 (South Lumina Avenue) has public parking and is family-friendly with generally calmer waters. Go early on summer weekends; parking fills up fast. If you’re renting paddleboards or kayaks, head to the Blockade Runner Resort area where the sound side offers easier conditions for beginners.

4. Downtown Wilmington Riverwalk

The mile-long Riverwalk connects restaurants, shops, and waterfront views along the Cape Fear River. It’s genuinely pleasant for an evening stroll, and street performers often set up near the stairs by Market Street. For families, stop at Kilwin’s for ice cream (the sea salt caramel is exceptional). If you’re visiting on a Saturday between April and October, the Riverfront Farmers Market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and features local produce, baked goods, and prepared foods.

5. The Brooklyn Arts District

Brooklyn Arts sits just north of downtown and has transformed from an overlooked neighborhood into Wilmington’s creative hub. Murals cover building facades along N. 4th Street, and galleries like ACME Art Studios offer rotating exhibitions. Check out Waterline Brewing for craft beer and a family-friendly patio, or visit during the Fourth Friday Art Walk (6–9 p.m. monthly) when studios open their doors. Parking is easier here than downtown, and you’re walking distance to authentic local spots rather than tourist traps.

6. Fort Fisher State Historic Site

This Civil War fortification sits about 20 miles south of Wilmington and offers both history and beach access in one stop. The earthwork remains are impressive, and the small museum does a solid job explaining the fort’s role in the Confederacy’s last major supply line. Admission is free. After exploring, Fort Fisher Beach is right there—less crowded than Wrightsville and excellent for shell hunting. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is next door if you want to extend the visit.

7. Catch Restaurant

Not an activity, but hear me out: Catch represents what Wilmington does well—coastal cuisine without pretension. Located at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, it offers ocean views and a menu built around local seafood. The she-crab soup and blackened mahi tacos are menu constants for a reason. Reservations recommended for dinner, especially on weekends. It’s pricier than casual spots downtown, but the quality and setting justify it for a special meal during your stay.

Our Brooklyn Arts District property puts you in the center of Wilmington’s creative neighborhood, with downtown restaurants, galleries, and the Riverwalk all within walking distance. Families appreciate the space and full kitchen, and the location keeps you connected to what makes Wilmington worth visiting.
